POSITION OBJECTIVE:


This position will work directly with the Additive Bilingual Programming to design a K-12 curriculum outline for Dual Language, assessments, and support for teachers and principals. Additionally, the Additive Bilingual Developer will support parent involvement in the Dual Language Schools, including recruitment, enrollment, selection and ongoing support. The Additive Bilingual Developer will work to establish language enrichment programs for students in elementary, middle, and high school.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)

 

• Develop a K-12 articulation of programming for students enrolled in Spanish Dual Language Programming.
• Collaborate with the curriculum and instructional team to ensure access to general education curricular materials in Spanish for Dual Language students.
• Assist with the use of necessary and appropriate instructional methods and materials, which are suited to the well-being and development of the students and to the nature of the learning activities, program and/or curriculum involved; implement established program or curriculum objectives; attend in-service training; continue to improve professional growth through study and experimentation; remain current in methods and techniques of instruction.
• Lead parent informational sessions and conduct parent interviews for newly enrolling Dual Language students.
• Work collaboratively with teachers to plan and teach lessons that improve the academic language and literacy skills of all students enrolled in the Dual Language schools.
• Conduct assessments that measure linguistic and academic ability as necessary and, using that assessment information, plan instruction in collaboration with the classroom teacher. Additionally, collect and interpret a variety of data; provide and document information regarding student progress for administrative purposes.
• Research and remain abreast of district curriculum/technology issues, programs and needs, and of state and national curricular trends with relation to current research in best practice for students enrolled in an Additive Bilingual Program.
• Confer with students, parents or guardians, and other staff, in an open and positive manner to provide guidance, evaluation, and encouragement of student achievement.
• Establish goals and objectives for teacher development, in conformance with courses of study specified by state and school district statutes, regulations, and guidelines.
• Collect and interpret a variety of data; provide reports for administrative purposes.
• Attend or participate in all required staff meetings and other activities deemed necessary by the district and/or building principals, in order to accomplish the objectives of the position and for professional development.
• Research and remain abreast of best practices for language learners and of state and national trends in Bilingual education, to include knowledge of programs and resources at the state and national level.
• Facilitate groups that work on Additive Bilingual issues within the school, local, and state community.
• Conduct and/or arrange staff development to support teachers responsible for ongoing implementation of school district curriculum in order to best support all students enrolled in an Additive Bilingual model.
• Assist with the development and implementation of curriculum, technology resources, and other appropriate accommodations that address special needs students, e.g., gifted, ELL, and special education.

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

• Reports directly to and is supervised by the Supervisor of Multilingual Programs.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: (positions in this class typically require)

 

Required:
• Possess or qualify for immediate issuance of a valid Washington State teaching certificate with an ESL, ELL, and Spanish or Bilingual endorsement.
• Knowledge and commitment to equitable practices in education and culturally responsive instruction

KNOWLEDGE: (position requirements at entry)

 

• Knowledge of current curriculum and instructional practices such as teacher-directed instruction, literature-based reading, math problem solving and use of math manipulatives, cooperative learning, and integrated curriculum
• Current knowledge of child development theory and its implications for teaching and learning.

 

SKILLS: (position requirements at entry)

 

• Spanish fluency; ability to review appropriate curricular materials, hold meetings with staff and communicate fluently with parents and community members.
• Commitment and ability to work with a full range of students including gifted, mainstreamed special education, English language learners, and students from diverse cultural and social backgrounds.
• Ability to work in a collaborative or team approach.
• Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues, orally and in writing.
• Ability to use varied assessments, including performance tasks, portfolios, and self-assessment.
• Ongoing professional development activities, such as college course work, professional associations, workshops, and in-service.
• A strong and positive attitude that each student can be taught and has the right and capacity to achieve personal academic excellence.
• Ability to perform all duties in accordance with applicable Board policies and district and legal requirements.
• Ability to meet and maintain punctuality and attendance expectations.
• Experience in leadership beyond a single classroom, e.g., grade level team, or state or district project.
• Evidence of ability to work effectively with a diverse group of adults for the purpose of promoting high student achievement.
• Thorough knowledge of the Bellevue School District curriculum.
• Experience with a variety of assessment tools, e.g., performance tasks, rubrics, journals, writing samples, Grade Book, and one-to-one technology implementation.
• Interest in learning and participating in activities that broaden content background knowledge and instructional theory.
• Preference will be given to candidates with an extensive knowledge in planning and delivering academic literacy instruction in the target language and with experience in Guided Language Acquisition Design (GLAD) or Sheltered Instruction Observational Protocol (SIOP).
• Ability to perform all duties in accordance with applicable Board policies and district and legal requirements.
• Ability to meet and maintain punctuality and attendance expectations.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. This position may be exposed to prolonged exposure to visual display terminals as required.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

 

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, odors, chemicals, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

 

Certificated staff work the school year contract with placement on the District and BEA bargaining agreement salary schedule. Placement on the schedule is determined by training and experience.
