POSITION OBJECTIVE:

 

The position of Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) works for the Early and Extended Learning Program. The position’s responsibilities are to provide care as outlined in health care plans created by certificated registered nurses, maintaining student health records, assessing the health needs of students to provide first aid or referrals, and assisting in nursing procedures. The LPN provides nursing care under the direction and supervision of Director of Early Learning. Other responsibilities include maintaining computer records and lists, securing required health records from parents, and maintaining health supplies.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)

 

• Provides nursing care as delegated by Director and as outlined in individual health care plans created by certificated nurse. Nursing care may include non-oral medications (i.e., injections, eye/ear medications), mixing medications, blood glucose monitoring, nasogastric and J-tube feedings, suctioning and tracheotomy care, feeding and medication by G-tube, performing clean intermittent catheterization, providing nebulizer treatments, and other nursing care appropriate for a LPN. Health care plans are developed and monitored by the certificated school nurse.
• Maintains student health records; creates new records; updates health information; ensures that health records are maintained in confidential manner.
• Attends to student health needs; assesses injuries or illness to determine appropriate action; provides basic first aid; refers students to health care professionals as needed. Determines need for certificated nurse's advice; calls certificated nurse for assistance as necessary; may call for emergency assistance. Calls parents regarding student accidents or illness as needed.
• Gathers, assesses and records immunization information; gathers health data for a variety of state reports such as immunization, vision, and hearing. Contacts parents or centers as needed to secure health records and immunization compliance in accordance with district procedures and timelines. Maintains documentation of parental contacts in appropriate manner. Prepares forms for reporting purposes.
• Compiles health records, cards and lists; provides reports as requested. Maintains health room log. Completes accident reports and distributes them appropriately. Compiles, updates, and distributes health concerns list as needed to staff.
• Administers medication to students as directed by physician, according to district policy and procedures.
• Reports situations such substance abuse or physical abuse to appropriate departmental/administrative staff for follow-up. Maintains confidentiality of student information.
• Works as a member of the program team in staffing to develop and implement programs and services to eligible children and families.
• May have flexible hours to allow employee to participate in family or community activities related to this program.
• Attends scheduled health clerk meetings/in-services activities out of district as required by ESD.
• May, in conjunction with departmental staff, provide information to parents. May provide back-up office assistance in the Early and Extended Learning Program site.
• May serve on various district committees and/or departmental work teams. Models appropriate and cooperative behavior, including protecting confidential information, consistent with district ethical guidelines.
• Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position as needed.

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

 

• Reports to and is supervised by Director of Early Learning.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require):

 

Required:
• High school diploma or equivalent. Current Washington State LPN license required.
Preferred:
• Previous experience in health care and/or pediatrics strongly preferred.

 

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS (positions in this class typically require):

 

• Current WA State LPN License.
• Must complete training in and adhere to district infection control plan.
• Requires first aid and CPR certification. Hepatitis-B immunization offered.

MENTAL DEMANDS:

Experiences frequent interruptions; required to deal with a wide range of student behaviors and academic abilities, which may include distraught or difficult students or parents. May be required to shift task and priority.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

 

Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, and push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

 

Record keeping requires substantial visual concentration; exposed to visual display terminals; potentially exposed to ordinary infectious diseases carried by students; occasionally required to attend to students' personal hygiene; required to take precautions to avoid exposure to student bodily fluids, disinfectants and medications.

 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

CTSA salary level 1 ($ 50,350 - $ 53,000 annual salary), 40 hours per week, for a 260-day annual assignment. Benefits include retirement, medical, dental, vacation, holidays, and other benefits according to Board policy.
