POSITION PURPOSE:
The position of Debate Teacher is responsible to teach Debate classes to middle school-aged students (grades 6-8). This course focuses on the qualities of strong public speaking.

• Building a classroom culture in which students love debate. • Create projects and personalized student learning plans that incorporate state and district standards • Incorporate 21st century skills into lessons including critical thinking, collaboration, problem solving, and effective communication. • Collaborate closely with fellow teachers in analyzing student work, developing interdisciplinary curriculum, and sharing curriculum strategies. • Differentiate lessons for the skills and needs of students from different backgrounds and ability levels. • Use a variety of instructional strategies to provide equity and excellence to students of all ability levels. • Provide lessons that integrate curriculum. • Maintain accurate records and grades for students; completes progress reports; participate in quarterly parent-student conferencing regarding student learning progress. • Maintain a well-managed, safe and respectful classroom learning environment. • The Debate Teacher will lead engaging workshops on the art of public speaking, covering all aspects of debate including delivery, organization, evidence analysis, argument intervention and debating theory. Students will practice the language of argumentation and the structure and procedure of formal debate. • Encourage students to think critically and articulate their views. Students will create speeches to inform and persuade. • Students will use necessary research skills to select, research and construct an argument about controversial issues.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: • Reports to and is directly supervised by the Building Principal. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require):
Required: • Possess or qualify for immediate issuance of a valid Washington State teaching certificate with an endorsement in Language Arts or Social Studies with debate experience. Prefered: • Experience in teaching diverse student populations • Training and/or direct experience with middle school-aged students. • Experience with a variety of performance-based assessment strategies • Experience with Standards-based grading • Experience teaching and assessing students using computer applications • A member of the National Speech & Debate Association prefered.
KNOWLEDGE (position requirements at entry):
• Knowledge of Bellevue School District's curriculum and instructional practices such as teacher-directed instruction, literature-based reading, problem-based learning, math problem-solving and use of math manipulatives, cooperative learning, and integrated curriculum.
SKILLS (position requirements at entry):
• Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. • Ability to deal with students in a warm and confident manner • Problem-solving and decision-making skills • Ability to organize activities and work independently • Ability to follow and give instructions. • Ability to incorporate technology into lesson units on a regular basis • Ability to perform all duties in accordance with all applicable Board policy, district and legal requirements • Ability to meet and maintain punctuality and attendance expectations
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. May work outdoors in inclement weather. May require physical mobility to move through a school campus, including up and down stairs and inside and outside.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Certificated staff work the school year contract with placement on the District and BEA bargaining agreement salary schedule. Placement on the schedule is determined by training and experience. Benefits include retirement, medical, dental and other benefits, according to Board policy and contract specifications.
