POSITION OBJECTIVE: The position of ESY Behavior Paraeducator(s) Temporary Summer is responsible for providing a wide variety of paraeducator assistance and support to special education students who exhibit behaviors that interfere with their learning, including implementing components of ESY Individual Education Programs (IEP's). This paraeducator will participate in ongoing collaboration with ESY Teachers in shared responsibility for implementation of behaviors that interfere with student learning. Positions at this level perform under the general supervision of the student’s case manager, and are fully trained to perform procedures independently, at all levels of student ability, with minimal direction.
Extended School Year (ESY) Program Dates: July 5th through August 1st, four days per week, Monday through Thursday. May include some program setup hours prior or at the end of the program for clean-up. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)
• Provides for the physical, health and safety needs of students. Provides social, emotional, and educational support for students who exhibit behaviors that interfere with their learning • Provides direct academic, functional, vocational and specifically designed instruction • Serves as advocate and support of students who exhibit behaviors that interfere with their learning in their least restrictive environment • Implements components of ESY Individual Education Programs (IEP's) • Ensure the safety of students and staff when dealing with escalated behavior • Data collection as directed by the case manager (teacher) • Model for school staff the use of replacement strategies/redirection and the utilization of self-monitoring systems when implementing behavior supports for students with behavioral challenges • Prepare and organize materials for instructional purposes, specifically related to positive student behavior and learning • Collect behavior data on individual students as directed • Take anecdotal notes on setting events that may precede targeted behaviorsPerforms related duties as required.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
• Reports directly and supervised by the Building Administrative Team and/or Special Education Supervisor, receives direction from assigned certificated staff.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require):
Required: o High school graduation or equivalent and
o And have at least one of the following:
- ETS Paraeducator Assessment, or
- Have an Associate of Arts degree (original transcripts), or
- Have earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at an institution of higher education (original transcripts), or
- Have completed a registered apprenticeship program (certificate);
- Foreign degrees accepted if evaluated by a NACES member company.
Preferred: o Experience working individually with students with diverse aptitudes and levels of achievement and with behaviorally disabled students. o Right Response Training
KNOWLEDGE (position requirements at entry):

SKILLS (position requirements at entry):
• Transporting special needs students. • Manipulation of chest-wall: clapping, postural drainage, oral suctioning, and administering inhaled medications. • Seizure care. • De-escalation strategies • Physical restraint of severely behaviorally disabled students. • Ability to coach students in job techniques and work ethics. • Ability to work with children in a warm and confident manner. • Ability to work effectively in a team, set shared goals and execute them with a degree of independence. • Ability to follow directions. • Ability to model and monitor appropriate student behavior. • Ability to maintain confidentiality and respect between students, parents and teachers. • Ability to maintain positive relationships with students, staff, parents and the public. • Ability to meet and maintain punctuality and attendance expectations. • Ability to perform all duties in accordance with all applicable Board policies and district and legal requirements. • Ability to perform all physical activities and meet all physical requirements indicated in section above. • Ability to demonstrate effective written and oral communication • Ability to perform all duties in accordance with all applicable Board policies and district and legal requirements
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, odors, chemicals, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.
