POSITION OBJECTIVE:

 

The position of Journey Mechanic is performed for the purpose of maintaining district vehicles at the safest level to support the mission of the District.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)

 

• Diagnoses mechanical, electric and other systems of District vehicles.
• Performs required maintenance and repairs on gasoline and diesel engines.
• Performs required maintenance and repairs of tires.
• Performs required maintenance and repairs on vehicle systems such as ignition, electric, hydraulic, clutch, transmission and breaks.
• Responds to vehicle failures that occur off sight and require service.
• Diagnoses malfunctions of vehicles.
• Supports vehicle maintenance and inspection as required by governmental agencies.
• May perform seat and upholstery maintenance as assigned.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

 

• Reports directly to and is supervised by Fleet Maintenance Supervisor


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require):

 

Required:
• Journey level automotive machinist certificate indicating completion of a two (2) year community college level gasoline or diesel mechanic course.
• Two (2) years of successful journey level mechanic work.

 

Preferred:
• Experience working with buses and large diesel vehicles.

 

Allowable Substitutions:
• Six (6) years’ experience as a journey level may substitute for the two year certificate of completion


LICENSING REQUIREMENTS (positions in this class typically require):

 

• Washington State Commercial Driver’s License class “B” with air brake restrictions removed and passenger “S” (school bus) endorsement within ninety (90) days of hire.


KNOWLEDGE (position requirements at entry):

 

• Possesses comprehensive knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines and the various systems in vehicles such as maintenance cars, trucks and vans, and passenger buses.
• Utilizes technical skills in assessing various problems identified with vehicles.
• Demonstrates knowledge of terminology related to the position.
• Understands and demonstrates proper use of tools, equipment and technology associated with the position, including machinery and diagnostic equipment.
• Adheres to required safety practices associated with the responsibilities of the position, following all required guidelines and best practices associated with the trade.
• Knowledge of record keeping related to the position.


SKILLS (position requirements at entry):

 

• Demonstrates skill associated with diagnostic tools and equipment and their effective use.
• Prepares and maintains accurate records required of the position.
• Demonstrates appropriate skills in the proper use of tools, equipment and technology as required for the position.
• Analyzes and problem solves related to vehicle maintenance and repairs.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team and work independently on specific projects or tasks.
• Demonstrates multicultural sensitivity with the ability to effectively and collaboratively work with diverse populations.
• Ability to perform all duties in accordance with all applicable Board policies and district and legal requirements.
• Ability to meet and maintain punctuality and attendance expectations

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

 

Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of forces constantly to move objects.

 

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, odors, chemicals, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.

 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Mechanics salary classification $ 45.10 (day shift) and $46.10 (swing shift), 40 hours per week, for a 260-day annual assignment. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement. Medical, dental, vision, long-term disability, and life-insurance eligibility is based upon 630 hours worked within a school year. Retirement provided through Washington State Department of Retirement Systems. Other benefits include vacation and paid holidays.
