POSITION OBJECTIVE:

 

The position of Landscape Specialist is done for the purpose/s of performing manual skilled or unskilled labor in grounds maintenance as part of the District’s commitment to an exceptional learning environment for students.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)

 

• Maintains landscaping, including flower beds, lawns, trees and shrubbery
• Performs lawn maintenance functions such as mowing, edging, blowing, fertilizing seeding and sodding turf areas, watering, mulching and general cleanup
• Performs gardening duties which include ground preparation, planting, cultivating, transplanting, weeding, pruning, watering and fertilizing flowers, plants, shrubs, trees, and other plant material;handles mulching, dumping materials from wheel-barrows and buckets as well as general clean-up
• Operates and maintains grounds equipment used by personnel in the maintenance of district property. Types of equipment include but are not limited to various lawn mowers, edgers, weed-eaters, thatchers, spreaders, blowers, roto-tillers, rollers, hedge-shears, chains –saws, hand-tools, light trucks, etc.
• Assists in the Repair and maintenance of play-ground equipment
• Assists in the repair and replacement of pipes, posts, tiles and signs
• Assists in installing and maintaining drainage and irrigation systems such as piping, catch-basins, cleaning and unplugging drains
• Works from ladders and scaffolds of various heights as needed to perform the duties of the position
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require):

 

Required:

• High School diploma/GED

 

Preferred:
• Two years’ experience in grounds/maintenance preferred

 

Allowable substitutions:
• Experience or education may be substituted for the two year requirement.

 

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS (positions in this class typically require):

 

• A valid Washington State Driver’s License for the purpose of driving a district vehicle

 

KNOWLEDGE (position requirements at entry):

 

• Knowledge of safety procedures in working with landscaping equipment and machinery
• Knowledge of basic operation and maintenance of grounds equipment, hand tools and power tools
• Knowledge of basic problem-solving strategies appropriate for the work assignments associated with the position

 

SKILLS (position requirements at entry):

 

• Communicates orally and in writing and while understanding and carrying out verbal and written instructions.
• Demonstrates basic skills in working as an effective member of a team.
• Does sustained physical work in all types of weather conditions.
• Demonstrates multicultural sensitivity with the ability to effectively and collaboratively work with diverse populations
• Ability to perform all duties in accordance with all applicable Board policies and district and legal requirements
• Ability to meet and maintain punctuality and attendance expectations

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

 

Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of forces constantly to move objects.

 

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, odors, chemicals, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and intense noises. This position requires working in various weather conditions, including inclement weather during the year.

 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

 

Maintenance and Grounds salary classification "A-3" ($ 35.10 per hour), 40 hours per week, for a 260-day annual assignment. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement.  Medical, dental, vision, long-term disability, and life-insurance eligibility is based upon 630 hours worked within a school year. Retirement provided through Washington State Department of Retirement Systems.  Other benefits include vacation and paid holidays.
